ERSTE LAGEN PREVIEW TASTING 2018: DANUBE RIVER REGION (Kamptal, Kremstal, Traisental, Wagram)

It is always a very interesting occasion to take part in the ERSTE LAGEN wine preview organized by the association of Austrian Traditional Wineries (ÖTW).

For those wishing to better understand the specificity and the aims of the ÖTW (“Österreichischen Traditionsweingüter”) association, I refer to my following article https://robertovinci.org/2018/01/23/anteprima-2017-osterreichische-traditionsweinguter-1-otw-erste-lagen/

I recall, briefly, that the members of the ÖTW association have, for about twenty years, scrupulously analyzed and observed wines from vineyards along the Danube river in the wine regions of Kamptal, Kremstal, Traisental and Wagram. The result of this long analysis was presented with the “Klassifikation 2010” in which 53 vineyards were designated “Erste Lage”. Then, with the “Klassifikation 2017”, the ERSTE LAGE vineyards became 61. With the “Klassifikation 2019”, there are altogether 81 vineyard sites that can carry the “Erste Lage” 1ÖTW designation on the bottle label.

In 2018, winemakers from the wine regions of Vienna and Carnuntum made the decision to define their work by classifying the vineyards of their wine areas.

The association “Rubin Carnuntum Weinguter” has worked intensively over the last ten years in researching and analyzing the geological characteristics of the vineyard sites of the hills around Hainburg, Göttlesbrunn, Arbesthal and Höflein.

Twenty Rubin Carnuntum wine companies created the ÖTW Carnuntum regional association. They cultivate half of the region’s wine-growing area. The next step will be the classification of individual vineyards in parallel with the development of a Carnuntum DAC.

As for the Vienna region, in recent times, six wineries have started to prepare the way for the classification of vineyard sites. In September 2018, twelve vineyards in the Vienna region were awarded the designation ERSTE LAGE ÖTW. Currently, eight companies have joined the ÖTW association.

The 2018 preview of ERSTE LAGE 1 ÖTW wines, coming from the Danube region (Kamptal, Kremstal, Traisental and Wagram), took place at the beginning of September 2018 in the beautiful and historical Grafenegg Castle.
